Fairphone, the Dutch social enterprise we've invested in, committed to fair trade smartphones that are easier to repair and made from materials sourced from an ethical and controlled supply chain, has unveiled the Fairphone 4.
The Fairphone 4, like its predecessors, is based on a modular design with no glued parts and therefore more easily repairable. Features that earned it a score of 9.3 out of 10 on the French Repairability Index.
Fairphone 4 results in zero e-waste. Further steps have been taken to conserve valuable materials used in the production of electronic devices. When a Fairphone 4 is purchased, these are responsibly recycled or properly reconditioned if from an old phone. This means that 100% compensation is made for the materials that are put on the market.
The body of the phone is made of solid aluminum from certified manufacturers, while the back cover is made of 100% recycled plastic. Fairphone is working to integrate fair-trade cobalt and lithium into its batteries, and is the only smartphone manufacturer that uses Fairtrade Gold in its supply chain.
No other smartphone company is active in this way, and it is this commitment that differentiates Fairphone from other tech players and what prompted SmartBit to invest in this project in 2019.
